Shape the voice of one of the UK’s leading regional theatres
The Marlowe Theatre is looking for a talented communications and public affairs leader to raise our profile, champion our impact and bring sharper focus to how we tell our story. This newly created senior role offers the chance to broaden your influence and play a key part in the future of a nationally recognised theatre.
About the role
We are looking for an ambitious and talented theatre communications professional to join the Marlowe Theatre in the newly created role of Director of Communications & Public Affairs.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone ready to take the next significant step in their career. Working at one of the UK’s leading regional theatres, you will play a central role in shaping how the Marlowe communicates its artistic vision, cultural impact and ambition, while strengthening relationships with audiences, artists, partners, funders and key decision-makers.
There has never been a more exciting time to join us. Our strong commercial performance – reflected in £20M annual turnover and a local economic impact of £55M – has given us the platform to extend our work. In recent years, we have expanded beyond our role as a presenting theatre, developing our own main house national touring productions, supporting artists through our Artists’ Network and Writers’ Room and delivering an annual new writing festival. Alongside this, we have grown our learning, participation and vocational training programmes, embarked on major capital developments, and continued to increase both our audience reach and our contribution to the regional economy.
As we enter our next phase of growth, we are seeking a strategic and collaborative communications leader with experience within theatre, the performing arts or the wider cultural sector. You will understand the opportunities and challenges facing today’s cultural organisations and be adept at communicating the value of the arts to a wide range of audiences and stakeholders.
As a member of the Strategic Management Team, you will contribute to organisational decision-making and long-term planning, gaining broad leadership experience within a complex and ambitious cultural organisation.
We are keen to hear from experienced communications professionals who are looking to broaden their strategic influence, develop their leadership capability and play a key role in shaping the future of a nationally recognised theatre.
If you would like to have an informal discussion about the post before applying, please contact Kate Mackonochie by email.

The Marlowe’s mission is to be the engine house for the performing arts in Kent, shaping the spirit of our region. Our ground-breaking work with young people focuses on skills development and includes technical apprenticeships, co-delivery of a UAL Level 3 Performing Arts course with East Kent College Group; being the national home of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures’ Cygnet School and the RSC’s Associate Theatre in the Southeast. We recently launched our Writers Room, developing regional talent and supporting our producing aspirations. We are an independent self-funding charitable trust, raising all our income ourselves without any core revenue funding from statutory bodies, reinvesting our profits in to our work with artists, young people and our communities.Above all, we value our team, and our award-winning People Plan is there to ensure that everyone who works for us is rewarded and supported.
