We’re looking for an experienced Internal Communications & Engagement Manager to play a key role in connecting our colleagues and volunteers to our purpose, our strategy and each other. Working across programmes, projects and organisational priorities, you’ll design and deliver engaging internal communications that inform, inspire and create meaningful dialogue. This is a role for someone who enjoys working with complexity, values collaboration and inclusion, and brings confidence, creativity and curiosity to how people experience communications at work.
What it’s like to work here
You’ll be part of the Communications & Fundraising directorate, working closely with colleagues across internal communications, people teams and operational areas. The team operates at both national and regional level, with a strong emphasis on partnership, shared learning and continuous improvement. You’ll work with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior leaders, project teams, staff and volunteers, in an environment that encourages thoughtful challenge, inclusive leadership and experimentation. The work is varied and fast‑moving, with a clear focus on helping everyone feel informed, engaged and valued.
As this is a national role, there is flexibility on your contractual place of work. Our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40–60% of your working week.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll develop and deliver internal communications and engagement plans for programmes, campaigns and organisational change, ensuring they align with the wider communications strategy. You’ll build strong relationships with senior stakeholders, acting as a trusted partner to support clear, engaging and audience-led communication, with a focus on two-way dialogue.
You’ll play an important role in connecting colleagues and volunteers across the organisation, helping people feel informed, involved and valued. This includes planning and delivering communications and events that strengthen understanding, encourage participation and build a sense of shared purpose.
You’ll measure impact and use insight to continuously improve activity, while promoting best practice to support confident, consistent communication. A key part of the role is supporting an inclusive and open culture - encouraging feedback, amplifying different voices, and creating opportunities to recognise and celebrate the contributions of colleagues and volunteers.
You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.
Who we're looking for
The package
The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
We all have a place we love. A place that inspires us. A place with its own unique and particular atmosphere. We were created to help people make the most of these very special places - and the good things that come from them. We're independent of Government and receive no direct grant or subsidy for our core work. Instead, our future depends on the active support and generosity of 5.8 million members, 20 million visitors, 60,000 volunteers and over 11000 people who work with us (as well as thousands who help us seasonally), as well as benefactors, tenants and other partners.Today, we're Europe's largest conservation organisation, with huge - and incredibly varied - responsibilities. We protect and welcome everyone to explore and enjoy some 709 miles of coastline, 250,000 hectares of land of outstanding natural beauty, 104 nature reserves, 6 World Heritage Sites. We also look after spectacular houses and gardens and one of the world’s largest and most significant holdings of fine art and heritage objects. We want every one of our visitors to enjoy these amazing places and have an experience they'll never forget. We want them to try something they've never tried before, to gain a unique glimpse into the past and, ultimately, to love these special places as much as we do.
